Laura Newman is a New York-based medical reporter, writer, and editor, specializing in clinical medicine, new drugs and diagnostics, and health policy. She is an expert writer in oncology, imaging, neurology, and targeted therapies.

From mid-2009 to early 2010, she managed the Urology blog and website at About.com (a New York Times Company) see: urology.about.com. Other online work includes reporting for Medscape and WebMD.

Medical Writing and Editing

Her newsletter, Medical Outcomes & Guidelines Alert, was the first to critically review clinical trials, patient outcomes research, and "best" practices in medicine. The newsletter was widely read in Washington, and among health outcomes researchers, physicians, and medical industry executives. Her work has  appeared in peer-reviewed journals, such as the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, BMJ, The  Lancet, and the Journal of Oncology Practice, on WebMD Medical News, in technology assessment reports, and trade magazines. Attendance at annual physician meetings helps Laura stay abreast of advances and debates in medicine.

Health Policy Background

Trained as a health policy analyst,  Laura was awarded an M.A from Tufts University. Building on that foundation, Laura worked in public service on health policy for more than ten years. During that time, she worked for the Bronx Professional Standards Review Organization, the New York State Casemix Study, and New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation. She has a longstanding interest in writing about public policy, managed care, and health care costs.
